The Spark of Enthusiasm

Clarence's journey with the BMW E9 began long before the first wrench was turned or the first panel was sandblasted. It started in his school days, fueled by a fascination with the blend of engineering and artistry found in hotrods, muscle cars, and pick-ups. This passion was reignited when a client, for whom Clarence had previously restored a BMW E9 2800 CS, inquired about the possibility of restoring a 3.0 CSI. Knowing the vehicle had sat in storage for 30 years, Clarence reached out to its owner, setting the stage for this ambitious project. 

A Car with a Story

The BMW's story is as compelling as its restoration. Originally owned by a professional tennis player in the 80s, the car was more than just a mode of transport; it was a constant companion through journeys across Germany, Switzerland, and France. It was imported into South Africa in the 80s, where it continued to grace the roads, a testament to its enduring appeal and the owner's dedication to its maintenance.

Restoration with a Vision

The goal was clear from the outset: restore the BMW E9 3.0 CSI to its original glory, albeit with a slight modern twist in the form of client-preferred wheels. This vision was respectful of the car's lineage, ensuring that the soul of the BMW remained intact while accommodating the personal taste of its current custodian.

Challenges and Triumphs in Restoration

The restoration was not without its challenges. The body, though in better condition than expected, bore the scars of time—peeling paint and rust on the floors and front quarter panels. It was a labor of love that required the expertise of Classic Restorations in Centurion for both bodywork and the painting process, restoring the BMW to its original Fjord Blue splendor.

The journey encompassed a thorough refurbishment of the chassis, suspension, and brakes, adhering strictly to original specifications to maintain authenticity. The heart of the car, its 3.0 csi straight-six M30 motor, was rebuilt to its former glory, ensuring that this vintage gem drove as beautifully as it looked.

Interior and Exterior Finishing Touches

The interior restoration was a testament to the dedication to authenticity, with original seats restored and the wood interior meticulously hand-moulded in American walnut. The preservation of the original dashboard and gauges further emphasized the commitment to maintaining the car's historical integrity.

With the BMW E9 3.0 CSI restoration completed, Clarence and his team are already looking to their next projects, including a 1975 BMW E9 racing replica CSL and a restomod CSL with a modern BMW Z4 M Coupe drivetrain. These projects, like the E9 3.0 CSI, promise to be more than just restorations; they are continuations of stories, of passions, and of the legacy of automotive excellence.
