Transform a 1965 Mustang into a Street-Driven Powerhouse

In the realm of custom car transformations, the iconic 1965 Ford Mustang takes center stage as Michael Schmalz Jr.'s dream becomes a reality, thanks to the craftsmanship of the world-renowned Ringbrothers. In a fusion of graphic design expertise and automotive innovation, SPLITR emerges as a street-driven powerhouse, redefining the boundaries of classic car customization.

The Dream Takes Shape: Michael Schmalz Jr., a designer based in Dubuque, Iowa, had long admired the unique blend of technological twists and futuristic finishes that define Ringbrothers' work. His dream of a transformed 1965 Mustang led him to the Ringbrothers shop in Spring Green, Wisconsin, where he found the ideal collaborators to bring his vision to life.

A Tight Schedule: What sets this project apart is the timeline – a mere weekend turnaround from conversation to commitment. After an enthusiastic meeting with Mike and Jim Ring, Michael found himself in a time crunch to deliver the rolling chassis by the following Monday. The urgency, however, only fueled the excitement for what was to come.

Craftsmanship and Verification:The Rings' commitment to quality is unwavering, and the first task was ensuring the 1965 Mustang was worthy of the transformation. Matching VIN numbers across various tag locations were crucial, and once verified, the project kicked off. Michael's detailed renderings provided the blueprint, setting the stage for the powertrain and suspension specifications.

Carbon Fiber Revolution: SPLITR's aesthetic and performance enhancements are truly groundbreaking. Between 50 and 60 percent of the body consists of meticulously crafted carbon fiber panels, handcrafted by Jim and Mike Ring. The double floor plan beneath the car contributes to aerodynamics, providing a flat bottom reminiscent of a race car and enhancing stability at high speeds.

Power and Performance: Under the hood, a Wegner Motorsports-built naturally aspirated 427 cubic inch Ford Racing engine roars to life. Generating over 500 horsepower, this engine, coupled with a Tremec T56 six-speed transmission and a Ford nine-inch rear end, ensures SPLITR is not just a showpiece but a beast on the streets.

Aerodynamics and Style:Beyond performance, SPLITR boasts aerodynamic modifications, including a custom front fascia and lower lip. The split BASF Glasurit waterborne paint scheme, conceptualized by Michael, adds a unique flair, ensuring this Mustang stands out in a crowd of ordinary red counterparts.

Stopping Power and Grip: With power comes responsibility, and the Ringbrothers turned to Baer for massive 6S calipers and 14-inch rotors to keep SPLITR in check. Riding on forged Ringbrothers Recoil wheels from HRE Performance Wheels and Nitto Invo rubber, the Mustang delivers exceptional grip and stopping power.

Interior Sophistication: The interior of SPLITR combines comfort and performance, featuring leather Recaro seats and a Vintage Air system for climate control. The unconventional use of Nissan seat material adds a unique touch, complemented by Ringbrothers billet parts throughout.

SPLITR exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship that define Ringbrothers' legacy in the world of custom car building. Michael Schmalz Jr.'s dream has been not just realized but elevated to new heights, transforming a classic 1965 Mustang into a high-performance work of rolling art. As the Mustang continues to serve as a blank canvas for daring projects, SPLITR stands as a testament to the limitless possibilities of automotive customization.
